Introduction To Bathroom Tiling

Bathroom-TileThere’s almost an unlimited choice of colors, patterns and textures of bathroom tiles. Bathroom tiles are the obvious choice to line the bath or shower area, but most people leave it up to the professionals. This does not need to be done as a bathroom that can be tiled by anyone in a weekend even someone without any previous tiling experience.

Tools For Bathroom Tiling

Before you start your tiling you will need the following tiling tools for bathroom tiling; Tile cutter, Tile saw, Grout spreader, Spirit level, Tile nibblers, Adhesive spreader, Tile cutting jig, Gauge stick (hopefully home made).

For a final touch to make your bathroom tile project look a little better you should carefully smooth off the border edges where cut with a tile sander Preparation For Bathroom Tiling.

Before you begin your bathroom tiling project, you MUST make sure the walls are clean and dry. You need to make the wall surface as smooth and flat as possible, to do this you will need to remove all flaking paint and any wallpaper that may be on the wall. Once you have your wall prepared you will want to make a start on plotting your tile position, to do this we recommend making a gauge stick to help you plot tile positions on the wall. Use a piece of wood laying several tiles along side it with a spacer between each tile, and mark off each tiles and spacers position along the stick. For more details on making a Gauge Stick please see our page Tile Layout & Preparation.

Setting Out Bathroom Tiles

Setting out the walls will depend a large amount on the size and shape of your bathroom ultimately. Work out where your bottom line of tiles will be going, mark it out and nail a temporarily thin guide batten to the tiling wall, making sure it follows the mark. To ensure your mark and guide are perfectly horizontal you should check them with a spirit level. Measure into the center of the wall and add another mark for this, now on each side of this center mark set out rows of tiles using your gauge stick. You may need to reposition your bathroom tiles by moving them half a tiles width to the side if the ceramic border tiles measure less then half a tiles width. Once this is done you need to get your vertical line up which should be done the same as the horizontal line, using a guide batten and a spirit level to make sure they are level, once level temporarily nail to the wall. If you have to tile around any object you should make that your starting point as this will help to keep the surrounding tiles to an equal size. By objects we mean things such as a window. As above you should use the temporary batten guide to position your row of tiles above the window. Remember, all cut tiles should be placed at the rear of the windows reveal.

For a final touch to make your bathroom tile project look a little better you should carefully smooth off the border edges where cut with a tile sander

Bathroom floors are always moist, or even wet for several hours every day. The waterlogged floor not only poses increased risk for slippage, but also acts as an excellent conductor for electricity, which can potentially lead to fatal accidents. As such, it is always imperative that you keep the safety of you and your family when choosing flooring material for your bathroom.

You will not be limited by choices here; there are so many types of materials available that you will have a hard time making a decision. From the natural wood to artificially produced mosaic, there are plenty of choices available for you. However, it is necessary to consider the pros and cons of each type of flooring before you decide on using a particular type. Here is a heads up of the positives and cons of the most popular types of bathroom flooring to help you with that.

Wooden flooring

Wood tiles or sheets make for excellent flooring material, imparting a classy look to your bathroom. Wood will look good with most types of bathroom decor. Also, anybody slipping on wet wooden floor will sustain considerably less severe injuries compared to a stone or concrete floor. However, remember that on prolonged contact with moisture, wood will rot and create a haven for mildew and fungi. If you have decided to use wood flooring, make sure that it is waterproofed prior to installation. It will greatly improve the life span of wooden flooring.

Granite flooring

There is a popular misconception that the surface of granite becomes slippery when wet. This is not completely true. Large, thin slabs of granite can indeed become slippery, but granite tiles with grout lines present every 10 sq. cm or so are perfectly safe for use as flooring material. Granite tiles will resist corrosion from cleaning agents like bleach and household cleaners, making these highly durable. However, make sure that you do not leave acidic chemicals on granite floors for extended periods of time. Good quality granite will resist the acid, sure, but will also get stained in the process. These stains can be hard to remove. Another drawback of this type of flooring is the high price tag.

Mosaic flooring

Mosaic tiles come in different sizes, allowing you to choose the one you wish to install in your bathroom. Mosaic tiles have one major benefit over other types of tiles, in that it does not get slippery even when wet. This makes it an automatic choice if you have senior citizens or babies in your home. Mosaic floors also resist corrosion and can last for years. However, the one drawback of this type of flooring is the high price it can command. The floors have to be cleaned frequently, since dirt and grime can accumulate in the ridges and curves of the tiles. Also, due to the characteristically rough texture of this type of tiles, especially around the edges, it is hard to make uniform grout lines when installing. Still, the slippage resistance is enough benefit for many customers, as indicated by the high popularity curve of this type of tiles.

Slate flooring

Slate is an igneous rock, and completely impervious in nature. As such, it provides absolutely 100% protection against growth of mildew and fungi. Also, it greatly resists corrosion from any kind of acidic chemical, making it a very good choice as flooring material. The high price tag may be a tad problematic for some customers, but the benefits do vastly outweigh this one drawback.

These are the major flooring materials, from which you can choose the one for your bathroom. Each has its own set of pros and cons, but ultimately, your budget may be the last criterion for your choice, as the pros do outweigh the cons in most cases.

A HOME they say is a place where you explore yourself. Surrounded by the things we love, it’s where we go to feel secure. Like the little black dress that always prompts compliments, fashion-conscious consumers are looking to the runways for design direction that will cause guests to ooh and ahh over their home. Tile has become a necessary style statement these days. These are the first things that people look when they enter the house. People nowadays are not governed by word “cheap” these days. So words like cheap floor tiles, are out of fashion. Style is the new mantra. Tiling a Wall, floor or counter top is like covering it with a shell: The result is relatively thin, yet durable enough to withstand water, dirt and traffic. Coming in all kind of shapes and sizes such toughness doesn’t sacrifice beauty. You can always find the most versatile, popular and affordable yet astonishing selection of your favorite tiles. Which to buy and where to put it depends as much on how it’s made as on how it looks. But as I said words like cheap floor tiles and cheap wall tiles are out of fashion. Tiles are such a wonderful things that these can easily be arranged in a work of art or can be cut into any shape or arranged in patters like swirls, circles, waves, triangles etc. For instance you can arrange some colored tiles to form an underwater theme for your bathroom. Adding tiles to your bathroom not only add style, class and elegance to the bathroom, they are also durable and easy to maintain. They come in various styles and on those wet bathroom floors; they give you the grip so that you don’t fall down. Usually medium sized, square-shaped granite tiles with 1/8 inch close grout lines are the best choice. This ensures cost-effective usage of filler material and will also bind the tiles strongly enough to give a long lasting end result. The medium sized floor tiles will make the room look more spacious. The polished granite tiles tend to reflect some light, thereby improving the lighting in the room. Choice of tiles Ceramic
floor Tiles Historically these have been the main type of tile available and are used as both wall tiles and floor tiles. Ceramic floor tiles are not generally suitable for outdoor use due to the change in temperatures from season to season. However the ceramic tiles glaze used on the top surface makes it ideal for use as kitchen tiles and bathroom tiles as it prevent moisture penetration when the right grouts and adhesives are used.

Natural Stone Wall Tiles

Is a collective term for a large variety of products including travertine, marble, granite, limestone, tumbled marble. As they are “natural” tiles they are often very hard-wearing (and to cut!) However natural stone tiles can also be porous and require treating or sealing before use.

Porcelain Floor Tile

Porcelain Tiles are generally harder wearing than ceramic tiles and virtually impervious to water, making them frost resistant. Porcelain tiles are used either for indoor or outdoor applications, on walls and floors. Often manufactured in larger sizes than ceramic.

One of the best trends in bathroom remodeling has been the use of natural stone products. From bathroom vanities to floor and wall tiles, natural stone products have been working their way in to every corner of the modern washroom. People love how easy they are to care for and the beauty and value that they can bring with a bathroom remodeling project.

If you are thinking about natural stone products to use in bathroom vanities, you want to make sure that they are durable and easy to care for. Choices of natural stone products include marble and granite. There are a number of different tops for bathroom vanities in both single and double sink styles. The color variations can be stunning when paired with the right cabinetry. For a truly modern look, you can also choose a stone bowl-style sink. These sinks sit on top of the bathroom vanities and these can be great if you want to use a piece of cabinetry that was not originally designed or intended for use in a bathroom. It is one of the hottest trends in bathroom vanities at the moment.

Other places that natural stone products can be used are as floor and wall tiles. Floor tiles and wall tiles are available in slate, granite, marble, travertine and several other types of natural stone. You should keep in mind that some stone products have different care requirements than others and that you should not overpower the room with a bunch of mismatched elements.

Regular decorating rules still apply even when working with natural stone products in a bathroom. If you are planning to use natural stone products to tile the walls, you may want to stick to lighter colored tiles with the occasional splash of more intense color. This is so that the room continues to look large, light and airy rather than cramped and closed in. Natural stone products can be purchased in tiles which range from large squares for use on floors to smaller squares and subway tiles for the walls. You are not limited to only one type, shape or color of tile but with every additional type or color of tile your cost will increase.

Natural stone products can also be used in the shower. Consider how striking your shower can look if you have it tiled in square tiles with a band of mosaic tiles. These can be the same as the larger tiles or be made from complimentary natural  stone products. Keep in mind that different natural stone products have different grains and degrees of hardness so you may want to speak with a designer to make sure that you will get the results you are looking for.

It doesn’t matter whether the natural stone products you are using are designed for bathroom vanities, sinks or tiles. The range of colors and choices make it possible to find something that suits every taste and budget and can help you to get the bathroom of your dreams.

Having stone as your tile floors in your kitchen can give you the most luxurious feeling. They are also used to make many other things like sinks or stairways. The thing about stone tiles is the beautiful pattern each tile has. There are several types of stone you can choose to decorate your home. The top 3 that are most popular are marble, granite and limestone.

Marble can be used for all types of flooring in your home. These need to be very sealed up because it can be very slippery when it is wet. We normally see marble in black and green colors. Either color that is chosen gives a very magnificent look. You no longer have to be rich to own marble kitchen tiling. It’s prices have decreased over the years.

Granite is also used for flooring but can be used for many the things also like kitchen counters and fireplaces. This is a lot like marble and can also be slippery when wet. Granite is extremely popular and is probably head to head with marble. Many people will prefer granite over marble.

Limestone is third in place and is used only for the floors of the house and a fireplace. Limestone is usually chosen because it is less expensive as the first two and also gives the natural appearance of stone. It is also not as slippery as granite and marble.

Besides these three there are still several kinds of stone used to model kitchen floors. Use your creativity to find right kind of stone for your floor and kitchen counters.
